- Community safety net - 0000-00-00
Trafficking of children and women would be encountered through establishment of community Safety Net by Maiti Nepal in association with RTL Foundation "Stiftung RTL - Wir helfen Kindern e.V., Cologne".
Trafficking of children and women, a social evil is one of the biggest problem that many nations are facing.
The United Nation says Human Trafficking is now the world's third largest criminal business, victimising hundreds and thousands of children and women each year.
Since 1500 Km border between Nepal and India is virtually porous there are potentially numerous routes that can be used by the traffickers.
Working to address the supply side of the problem entails running programs, which seek to create an environment that are not conducive to trafficking. This can be done by increasing the risk barriers for traffickers or it can also be achieved by attempting to tackle the root causes of the problem - Right to information to ignorant persons.
In order to address this problem in Border Areas Maiti Nepal has established new transit homes in districts of Sarlahi and Rauthaut.
Transit home serves the purpose of a safe shelter for the girls, where potential victims of are prevented from being trafficked.
Transit home also is a haven for repatriated children and girls, where they stay for a short period to start their new beginning in their life. Transit home is equipped to provide services to 30 girls at any one point in time.
Providing counselling services to survivors, facilitating medical - check-ups and motivating girls to help identify criminals are major activities of transit homes.
With the sole aim of providing appropriate information to children and women Maiti Nepal has created community safety net in the districts of Jhapa, Morang, Dhanusa, Rupandehi and Kanchanpur.
Task of Safety Net is to establish surveillance system in five districts of Nepal-Indo Border to check trafficking and form a network of organisation, groups of rural women, elected women representatives and women police, students, teachers and local authorities responsible of administration and development.
