Prevention Home

The possibility of children/women being sold into sexual slavery is increasing. In order to prevent such incidents from occurring there is a need to tackle the problems at the source. Motivated by this idea, prevention programmes have been initiated at the grass-root level to prevent children and women from being sold into sexual slavery.

Girls who are at risk of being trafficked are sheltered in the Prevention Homes for a period between four to six months. During this period they receive counselling, training in income-generating skills such as sewing, carpet weaving, fabric painting, tailoring, local soap making, bakery products making and handloom weaving. This program also extends life skills such as health care education, non-formal education, and comprehensive information and education on Human Trafficking. Each prevention home can house 30 girls at one time.

In order to encourage and motivate the girls to become social activists, a training package is designed to encourage leadership, group formation, and community mobilization skills. Educating the girls on children’s rights is also a strong component of the program. The goals of this program are to help girls regain their self-esteem as well as equip them with livelihood earning skills.

Three Prevention Homes are in operation at Chisapani in Nuwakot (established in 1996), Hetauda in Makwanpur (established in 1997), and Bardaghat in Nawalparasi (established in 1998) district.

Residential Training (1996-2005):

  • After completion of training 22 girls were placed in job.
  • Prevention homes at Chisapani, Hetauda and Bardaghat successfully completed 13th, 18th and 12th batch of trainings.
