  • Girls reveal their horrifying sufferings - chill runs down the spine!!! - 2008-07-04
    A horrible story, which almost made everybody shocked and speechless was revealed in Maiti Nepal amidst a group of media persons on 4th july. Journalists present on the occasion admitted it was the most peculiar type of incident they had ever faced. They could hardly believe that girls at the tender age of 12 to 14 are made involved in prostitution, drug addiction, robbery and finally trafficked to for commercial sexual exploitation.

    Realities evoked when two groups of girls who knew already knew each other ,rescued on separate occasions, happenned to meet at Maiti Nepal and came into confrontations They called each other as ruffian of Boudha and Chahabil and would restrict each other from entering their so called state. All of them were from impoverished family. They had abandoned their home and remained in the streets befriending other street kids and garbage collectors . Remaining on the streets , they had learnt every street evils from smelling dendrites to being involved in prostitution .

    Requesting for anonymity, the girls revealed every kind of crime taking place in their circle. They would reach out to their costumers, take him to guest house or some isolated place like jungle, make him drunk as per the plan set up by the boss of their circle. Finally a group of other boys of their network following the girls would loot the customers and seize cash and gadgets like mobile sets, rings and chains. >br />
    In response to the inquiry of HIV/ AIDS the girls said they were unaware of it . But they could get condoms and other pills from an unidentified place freely as recommended by the group mobilizing them in the business. The girls would sell it to their costumers for Rs 20 per piece of condom. Costumers would be of any age group and in any attire - western suit to Nepali national costume , all of them rich and fine as labelled by the girls. The girls said they had been in the profession some two years since.

    Taking advantage of the occasion,the girls expressed their gruelling disappointment with the police. Journalists felt it quite vulnerable as the girls said they had been repeatedly exploited by the police personnel who are in fact supposed to protect such girls and eliminate such crimes.

    Out of the five girls telling their own version of pathetic story, two were the survivors of trafficking trafficked to India , later rescued by Maiti Nepal in coordination with Kolkota based New Light organization. Three of them were rescued from sexually exploited form by Nepal police and handed over to Maiti Nepal. The interesting part was that the girls from the two groups knew each other and started calling each other as whore, when they met at Maiti.

    Concluding the press meet, chairperson Ms. Anuradha Koirala expressed the need that stakeholders should focus on such social issue besides just holding talks on politics and powersharing. She said it was the most sensitive incident she had ever faced in her 15 years long career. She felt it imperative that all the political parties, police personnel, human rights activists, journalist should do something substantial on such issue . Finally she thanked all of the attendants for their presence despite of their hectic schedule.
