    .Women Empowerment Programme

Focusing on women is important as in most of the society they struggle against gender norms that limit their resources and opportunities for improvement. Also since the empowerment of women is a tremendous resource for social change and a prerequisite in the broader fight against trafficking of women and children, Maiti Nepal has launched a project entitled, ?Women Empowerment Programme? in the districts of Kaski and Palpa since September 2007. The project is funded by Danish Embassy and runs for the duration of 2 years.

Working for empowerment entails running programmes, which seek to create an environment that is accessible to community. Therefore, the project consists of different programmes directly reaching out to the target groups.

Awareness Campaigns on women empowerment focusing on Girl trafficking, HIV/AIDS and safe migration are fundamental components of this project. Rallies, Workshops, teachers training, Interaction programmes with VDC/DDC Level networks, Interaction programmes with Transport Workers, Training to young girls on Life Skills, Training to women on leadership, Training to students on publication of child wall magazine for advocacy, orientation programme with Women and Youth activists would be the main activities under this theme.

Next step towards women empowerment is training them on informal savings and credit schemes so that they can become economically sustainable and make their own decisions on utilising their own money. To enlighten women on legal issues, women would be trained on formation of Para Legal committees. This would pave a way for obtaining knowledge on legal system thus enabling women to handle cases of violence upon women.

The programme is followed by a mixture of right based and sustainable livelihood approaches while giving due recognition to people?s susceptibility to trafficking. It aims to strengthen the livelihood options on one hand, and to empower people on the other. Maiti Nepal is of the view that once the communities are made aware of their duties and responsibilities, once at-risk and survivors of trafficking are provided their rights and entitlements, and with productive opportunities and are taught about women empowerment, they will continue with their improved living behaviour irrespective of changing socio-political situations.

As long as women remain disadvantaged, half of Nepal?s human resources will not realize its full potential. This is detrimental for the country's social and economic development.
