With instigation of Maiti Nepal a monitoring committee was formed to keep vigilance on cases of abuse and exploitation escalating in Cabin and Dance restaurant throughout Kathmandu Valley.
After receiving reports of cases of exploitation in cabin and dance restaurants by employees, Maiti Nepal made efforts to solicit for the Rights of employees, especially women employees.
Regular meetings were held with representatives from small cottage industry, Kathmandu municipality, National Women Commission, Nepal restaurant and small hotel worker's union, Nepal restaurant owners Association, District Police, Labour department, Local Administration, Nepal guest house association and other related organisations.
After five months of continuous toil a monitoring committee was formed to assess working conditions of employees. Monitoring team executed fifty two spot field visits. Field study revealed that working condition inside restaurants was pathetic and sexual harassment of women employees was prevalent. This has lead to girls being trafficked from restaurants. However, women employees did not complain of such happenings due to fear of losing jobs.
The next step agreed on by monitoring team was to dedicate respectful status to this profession by providing following facilities: Availability of identity card, safe and hygienic working place to be maintained inside restaurants, job guarantee to be given to employees, child workers to be prohibited, working hours for female employees should be fixed, vulgar dancing of girls in restaurants should be forbidden, uniform should be provided to female employees and familiarisation visit to waitress to esteemed hotel employing waitress. Monitoring team is now making efforts to implement the agreed terms.
