  • Country?s Current Situation and its Impact on Children - 2004-04-21
On April 21, 2004 Private schools of Kathmandu came together to discuss country’s current situation and its impact on children especially school going children.

Ms. Anuradha Koirala, Chairperson of Maiti Nepal chaired the meeting. She highlighted on the current situation of the children affected by armed conflict. She said that the parents and guardians of these children are unable to provide educational support due to financial constraints thus the children are left with no other option but to drop out of schools.

Ms. Koirala urged the private schools to provide educational support to children affected by armed conflict as their help and contribution would be a kind gesture towards the children as they would feel loved and cared by the society and relief the burden off their parents and guardians.

Participants agreed on providing support to all the children whether they are the children of police, army, Maoists or the general public. Mr. Patrick Wilson, Principal of Wilson Academy has committed to support two survivorised girls in his school.

The participants lamented that admitting conflict affected children in private schools could lead to threat from various groups. Therefore, they suggested that the conflict affected children to be kept at homes of NGOs and admit them in government schools and they would provide financial support of these children.

Principals/Vice Principals of private schools have committed to support survivorised children living under the care of Maiti Nepal and any other organisations.
