- Maiti Nepal backs Nepal Government 's initiative of imposing blanket ban on foreign employment via India - 2010-01-30
To welcome the foreign ministry's move of imposing blanket ban in foreign employment via India, Maiti Nepal lead delegation met the foreign affairs minister, Sujata Koirala on 29th January 2010. Earlier, the ministry had decided to correspond to Indian authorities not to permit any Nepali citizen to vie for employment in the Gulf countries through Indian airport.
The decision of foreign ministry becomes public amidst the advocacy of organizations like Maiti Nepal and its allies who were keen on finding a sustainable solution to the problem of human trafficking in the Gulf countries from Nepal .Many Nepalese girls working as housemaids in the Gulf countries are sexually and physically exploited and even deprived of their basic human rights. They are trafficked to Gulf countries with fake passport and other forge documents. When they become mentally and physically ill or infected with HIV, they are sent back to Nepal with bare feet and without a single penny in their pocket.
Maiti Nepal warmly welcomes the step taken by the ministry and believes that, the effective implementation of the decision can contribute significantly in reducing the number of girls and women being trafficked to the Gulf countries.
