Maiti Nepal establishes a Shelter Home for the protection and rehabilitation of rescued and returned
trafficked girls and for orphans. The Shelter Home provides awareness training, informal education, skill training, as
well as voluntary medical checkups, and psychological and medical counseling for survivors of trafficking. An average
of 100 survivors resides in this rehabilitation home at a time.
1994
Public Awareness Programs against girl trafficking initiated as extensive campaigns. Interaction programs and workshops, participated in by all levels of society, conducted to advocate, raise public support, and create social pressure against girl trafficking. As of 2001, the program has been organized in 30 districts.
Efforts begin for the rescue and repatriation of trafficked Nepali girls and women from brothels in various brothels in India. As of 2001, Maiti Nepal instrumental in rescuing and repatriating nearly 400 trafficked Nepali girls and women. Nearly 100 survivors of domestic violence, rape, and girls with very poor economic condition are employed by Maiti Nepal in its offices.
A Children's Shelter Home established to provide shelter and opportunities for overall development for orphans, destitute children, child victims of domestic violence, and children from very poor families. As of 2001, nearly 200 children live in the Shelter Home - most of them between 5 and 18 years of age, while some are under five years.
Campaigns initiated, with the help of the Nepal Police, well wishers, and rescued, repatriated and intercepted girls to identify, search for, and assist in the arrest of girl/woman traffickers resulting in the arrest of nearly 300 persons accused of trafficking girls/women.
A separate legal counseling and assistance branch established to provide free legal assistance to victims to file law suits against traffickers; assist victims of domestic violence and rape; and act as moderator in legal proceedings in court. As of 2001, charges of girl trafficking filed against 400 traffickers:
160 cases filed at Maiti Nepal's initiation are under judicial consideration.
130 cases initiated by Maiti Nepal have been decided in the courts.
185 persons accused of girl trafficking have been fined and jailed.
1996
Maiti Nepal establishes Prevention Homes in various problem affected and high-risk areas: Hetauda in Makwanpur district, Chisapani in Nuwakot district, and Bardaghat in Nawalparasi district. Six-month income generating skill training are conducted for girls at risk of being trafficked. Participants are provided with accommodation at the Prevention Home during training. Maiti Nepal provides income-generating micro-credit of upto Rs. 3000 to participants of the training program to enable them to become self-employed and self-reliant. As of 2001, more than one thousand girls received awareness and skill training at the Prevention Homes.
Rescue operations begin in the main cities of India - Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai - where most of the Nepali girls are trafficked. Local contact offices established by Maiti Nepal to address this problem, and to work in coordination with local social organizations and local police authorities.
1997
Transit Homes established at the Nepal-India border points in Kakarvitta, Sunauli, Birgunj, Jogbani, Nepalgunj, Janakpur, Pashupati Nagar, and Dhangadi to intercept girls/women, being lured and trafficked by pimps, before they enter India, and to conduct prevention and surveillance campaigns. Intercepted girls/women are returned safely to their respective homes. As of 2001, Maiti Nepal Transit Home staff intercepted nearly 1000 girls/women in the process of being trafficked. They were handed over safely to their guardians.
About 100 girls lured with promises of employment and in the process of being trafficked to Gulf countries through India were intercepted at various border points and returned safely to their respective homes.
Awareness oriented program - "Students Against Girl Trafficking" - initiated in five districts of Nepal to mobilize students in social awareness campaigns against girl trafficking. Creative competitions organized for students to supplement the school curriculum, and enhance the skills and creativity of the students. Awareness generating reading materials published for the students.
Cross-border workshops, with the participation of representatives of government and non-government organizations from Nepal and India, initiated at Nepal-India border towns of Kakarvitta, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Janakpur, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, and Dhangadi - the main exit/entry points used for girl trafficking. The workshops share information and formulate strategies to prevent girl trafficking through these border points.
1998
Maiti Nepal initiates ongoing interaction meetings and workshops with Members of Parliament and leaders of various political parties to create awareness of the problem of girl trafficking, and to appeal and motivate lawmakers to raise this problem as a national issue in Parliament. On the first day of every parliamentary session Maiti Nepal hands out appeals to Parliamentarians requesting them to take firm action against girl trafficking. As of 2001, Maiti Nepal conducted two National Interaction Workshops on this problem participated in by leaders of main political parties and parliamentarians.
Teresa Academy established in order to provide proper education to the children living in the Shelter. The school aims to provide education up to Class 10. As of 2001, there are 115 students in Teresa Academy. Maiti Nepal sends 24 children to private boarding school for secondary education.
Publication of "Maiti" begins - a newsletter to raise public awareness. The newsletter raises issues on the problems of girl trafficking, and chronicles activities of Maiti Nepal including real life accounts of the sufferings and horrors faced by trafficked girls/women.
1999
Hospice established at Sattighatta in Jhapa district to provide shelter, affection, and dignity to HIV/AIDS infected survivors of trafficking and children, and to rehabilitate them. The patients are provided medical treatment as well as skill enhancing training as part of their rehabilitation. Qualified nurses and health workers are employed on a full time basis for the medical treatment and care of the Hospice residents.
Additionally, a Primary Medical Health Care Center also established in the Hospice premises in Sattighatta to provide primary health services to neighboring local residents at affordable costs.
Maiti Nepal buys nearly 1.25 acres of land at Pingalasthan in Gaushala, Kathmandu and generates funding to construct its own building - The Maiti Nepal Child Protection and Women Rehabilitation Home. This complex consists of Women's Rehabilitation Home, Child Protection Home, School, and a Primary Health Care Center as well as administrative offices.
2001
Interaction workshop initiated for schoolteachers to create in-depth awareness among them on trafficking of girls/women. Teachers provide valuable inputs in suggesting revisions on the subject of girl/women trafficking included recently in the school curriculum.
The Eastern Regional Women’s Rehabilitation Home at Itahari established to provide shelter and income generating skill training to girls/women at risk and to former victims.
Maiti Nepal records and publishes music cassettes/CD called "Maiti." The songs are written and sung by the children of Maiti Nepal.
